What is JESD204?

The JESD204 standard is a serial interface developed to simplify and accelerate communication between data converters (e.g. ADCs and DACs) and digital components (e.g. FPGAs). Used in fields such as aerospace, defense and telecommunications, the JESD204 standard enables fast, reliable data transfers while reducing wiring complexity, which is crucial for embedded systems and devices requiring low latency and high efficiency.

The JESD204 standard is available in several versions, such as JESD204B and JESD204C, which bring successive improvements in speed and performance.

JESD204 operating principles

Unlike older parallel interfaces, JESD204 uses serial transmission lines, reducing the number of connections and simplifying wiring. More recent versions increase bandwidth capacity and introduce advanced synchronization features to ensure stable, accurate transmission, essential in applications where latency and reliability are critical.

Each JESD version has been developed to meet the growing need for high-speed transmission. For example, version JESD204B introduced improved synchronization management. JESD204C offers even higher data rates, essential for applications requiring low latency and high efficiency in modern embedded systems.

This update standardizes all variants on 4GB DDR4 memory and 32GB eMMC NAND storage, while integrating an I2C flash device to store non-volatile user data, enabling unique identification of each module. A version of this SoM supports data rates of up to 12 Gbps on the transceiver interfaces, making it possible to use video standards such as 12G-SDI and high-speed data conversion with JESD204B.
