Compute Express Link CXL®
Boost the interconnectivity of your FPGAs!
What is CXL®?
The Compute Express Link® (CXL®) is a high-performance communication interface designed to improve the connection between the central processing unit (CPU) and the FPGA. Developed to optimize data management in HPC environments, the CXL® interface enables shared memory and fast data transfer. This interface is used for complex applications such as artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and real-time data processing.
CXL® operating principles
CXL® works by creating a high-speed communication channel between the processor and hardware gas pedals. CXL® is designed to efficiently manage data transfers by reducing latency through shared memory. This enables the processor and gas pedals to access the same data without duplication. CXL® features three protocols that optimize exchanges according to the specific needs of applications, whether intensive real-time calculations or workloads requiring fast memory access.
CXL® applications
The CXL® interface is particularly well suited to areas where computing power and fast data access are essential:
- High-Performance Computing (HPC): requiring fast interconnection between processor and gas pedals
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning: for intensive, real-time data processing
- Next-generation data centers: where access to fast, shared memory is essential
- Large workloads: such as simulations and complex data models
