What is 100G interface?

The Ethernet 100G interface, also known as 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE), is a high-speed network standard developed to support data transmission rates of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps). This interface represents a significant advance over previous standards such as 10GbE and 40GbE. It meets the growing need for higher bandwidth in data centers, telecom networks and enterprise environments.
The 100GbE is designed for data-intensive applications such as cloud computing, video streaming and big data analysis. Data transfer is faster and more reliable, whether over copper or fiber networks.

100G interface operating principles

The 100G Ethernet interface works by sending data at very high speeds over several channels. Each channel carries a portion of the data. These channels are then grouped together to achieve a total data rate of 100 gigabits per second. This method enables much more data to be transmitted simultaneously than with older technologies.

100G interface applications

The 100G Ethernet interface is used in many applications requiring high performance and low latency:

  • Data centers: 100GbE is essential in data centers to handle the massive flow of data between servers, storage and external networks, supporting tasks such as virtualization and high-performance computing.
  • Telecommunications: In the telecoms sector, 100GbE is used to enhance transport and metropolitan area networks, enabling faster Internet speeds and smooth content delivery.
  • Cloud computing: Cloud service providers are using 100GbE to meet the growing demand for faster data transmission in cloud-based applications and services.
  • Video broadcasting and streaming: The high bandwidth of 100GbE enables the distribution of uncompressed high-definition video streams, indispensable in modern multimedia production and broadcasting.
  • Scientific research and AI: Organizations handling large datasets, such as those in AI research, genomic analysis and climate modeling, benefit from 100GbE to facilitate data transfer and processing.
